Blog Post 1: E-Health

The topic I found most interesting in the textbook, Communication Technology Update, and Fundamentals: 16th Edition was the chapter over E-Health. This can be described as the use of electronic information and communication technology in the healthcare field. Why I find this topic interesting is because having access to E-Health should be empowering to the public and it should allow people to manage their own health via new technologies and online resources. This is interesting to me because it corresponds to what I am studying here at UTSA as a health communication major. This is just another way for people to be aware of their own health and to be their own health advocate. By allowing access to personal electronic health records and access to more information people can better manage and take care of themselves from a health communication standpoint. According to the text, over 77% of adult Americans have smartphones and by using that new technology this allows people to take an active role in their personalized health care as technology changes and grows over time. Whether it is through apps or social media having more people care and check in about their health and wellness is easier than ever.

  1. Hello! I found your post very interesting! I have never stopped to think about how lucky we are for living in an era that we can search for everything in a little device we carry in our pockets. I believe it is important for more people to know about E-health and its benefits since it can help a lot. I remembered that when I studied abroad, the company I went with recommending downloading this app that was pretty much a 24 hours online medical consultation, so if you were feeling sick or something else happened, you could just text a doctor on that app and if it was the case, they would even go to your house. I thought that was very cool, especially because they spoke English and the majority of the students there did not know the country's language.

  2. Hello Sarah. I really liked this topic and your post! I am extremely into health and fitness, and I think this type of technology would be great in terms of people participating in their own health. You are definitely right about the amount of people who either have a smartphone or access to one. In this case, being able to access a health app or whatever it may be can provide them with information about their health. In addition, you mention that it makes it easier and faster to access their health information, and I think this is very important. Our health is crucial and I think the ability to monitor and maintain it this quickly and accessibly is amazing. Also, not only do I know, but see many people on fitness or health apps already checking their steps and what they eat, so in this case, I think people would love this!
