Blog Post 2: Social Networking Sites


According to the class lecture and section IV, chapter 24 in the textbook, a social networking site, or SNS there are three criteria that a website must meet to be considered an SNS. A website must allow users to “(1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system”. Social media is considered a form of electronic communication however social media doesn’t necessarily mean one Is using a social networking site. Social media has come to influence many aspects of our lives, real and online. It documents the world and lets us interact with people we wouldn’t typically be able to. Because of social networking sites, we can now view the thoughts and voices of many including the current president of the United States. According to Sebastian Valenzuela Et al. “recent literature has found that informational uses of social media may have different effects on participatory behaviors than expressive behaviors in social media platforms and different types of discussion network attributes lead to distinct political outcomes online and offline” whether the social network be Facebook, or Twitter to name a few, the interactions that political people have within these sites can affect not only the thoughts of those viewing the sites but can affect the world around us. As Valenzuela Et al. states “social networks encountered through these platforms may provide different resources such as novel information, possibilities of discussion, political expression, and recruitment.”. From the bulletin board systems in The 1980s and 90s to Myspace and then Facebook many strives have been made in the social networking site genre that we can now stay in an updated near live world through our screens. In the article cited they describe strong and weak ties over both Facebook and Twitter, strong ties being regular encounters with family members, spouses, and friends that have a healthy social influence on people’s political behaviors. The weak ties include are acquaintances who serve as more distant clusters of people with more assorted perspectives.

    After reading your article about the presence of politics, I thought about whether the creators of these different social media sites expected this to happen. Personally, I still find it odd that certain political figures are able to express their thoughts so freely regarding different issues. I believe that this has caused a deeper rift between different political groups. Interesting articles!

Socail meadia has taken the world on full steam and the technological adavances that come along with it have been very beneficial for the human consumers and has made things in life a lot easier. You can know pretty much anything you want to know about news, sports, or celebrities all from the small cellualr devices we carry in our pockets. Very interesting stuff!
